Enzymes

Enzymes are highly biological catalysts that are protein in nature and can alter the rate of chemical reations, without themselves being chemically changed at the end of the reaction. Enzymes are classified according to the chemical reations they catalyse. Anabolic reation ('Building up' reation): Make/synthesize new substances or product from 2 or more substrate molecules. E.g. amino acid > polypeptides > protein! Catabolic reation ('Breaking down' reation): Breaks down a substrate into 2 or more molecules. Enzymes lower the activation energy needed to start a reation.

Lock and key hypothesis. Lock: Enzyme. Key: Substrate. Enzymes are required in minute amounts. As enzymes remain unchanged in the reations they catalyse, the same enzyme molecule can be used over and over again. Enzymes are specific. Each enzymes can only bind to one substrate/one class of substrates, which will be complementary to its active site. Enzymes are affected by temperature. Optimum temp- best suitable condition. Effect of temp: (Rise) in temp increases speed of molecular movement, increase chances of molecular collision, increase rate of reation. However, at high temp, vibrations are so violent that they break the hydrogen bonds in enzymes, causing it to lose it shape and active site. DENATURE.(Decrease) in temp, decrease speed of molecular movement, decrease chances of molecular collisions, decrease rate of reaction. Enzymes are affected by pH. Enzymes works best at optimum pH. Extreme pH changes denature enzymes.

Revising Bio in the at twelve AM online. Maybe this will also help those who hasn't started revising this chapter! O: My day wasn't very much productive. And why is The Little Nyonya showing at this point of time(!!!) For the past few days I failed to resist switching on the teevee at 1730. Also, shopppping. Spent 'bout 130bucks in the past three days. My hands just gets too itchy and I can't focus studying! Urghhhhhhhhhh
